"I've never seen a Lindy Hopper who wasn't smiling. It's a happy dance. It makes you feel good."
Frankie Manning

CHARLESTON
Find out more
Charleston is a dance that gained popularity in America during the 1920s - a time period often referred to as the "Roaring Twenties". The big explosion of Charleston started with the composition "The Charleston" by James P. Johanson and this made the Charleston accessible and accepted among the general population. Everyone danced the Charleston. Although this composition popularized it, the dance originated in African-American communities on a small island near the city of Charleston in 1903.
AUTHENTIC SOLO JAZZ
Find out more
Authentic Solo Jazz originated in America in the 1920s and 1930s and is danced without a partner. It is the most energetic and lively dance; its structure was significantly different from all other dances. Just as Hot Jazz music in the 1920s gave life to the Charleston, with the evolution music, Swing Jazz influenced the development of Solo Jazz in the 1930s and 1940s. The main characteristics are individuality and rhythm, and each dancer is free to express and develop their own style.

BALBOA
Find out more
Balboa is a swing dance that developed in the 1920s and 1930s in Southern California. The name Balboa comes from the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach where the dance is believed to have been popular. The moves appear to be based on the Charleston, but have evolved into something completely unique. The modern term "Balboa" consists of two dance styles that emerged during the Swing era, which we call "Pure Balboa" and "Bal-Swing." Although they were once separate dance styles, they had enough similarities in connection and aesthetics that have merged over time and are now most often danced together.
